It’s so contradictory over what is and isn't suitable for an M-rated horror game that I can’t help but scratch my head.įor instance, a lot of the film posters and advertisements in the original Dead Space are retro-inspired, drawing aesthetics from ‘sploitation films of the 70s and 80s. While not accurate in all cases, I’m not gonna lie, Dead Space Remake could have benefited from clutching its pearls a bit less about certain aspects of its narrative, especially when Motive chose to be more aggressive regarding other facets of the world. ![]() It's so oddly sanitised that it runs counter to several of the game’s messages.Īs Garth Marenghi, fictional writer of drivel and a hilarious BBC parody of Stephen King once said with remarkable clarity - “only cowards use subtext”. Sure, there are the cute self-aware messages after using the store, but they're hardly a biting commentary on their own. No, what’s irked me about Dead Space Remake is how reluctant it is to acknowledge several aspects of the late-stage capitalist dystopia you're trapped in aboard the USG Ishimura, and how everything in it has been utterly commoditized. I’m a mature adult who can handle the idea of realistic things you’d expect in the future, let alone in the present. ![]() I know the title will draw a few “no, really, I’m SOOOO surprised” snarky comments on Twitter, but let's get it out of the way: I’m not complaining about a lack of cleavage or there being unisex bathrooms.
